Islamabad: A statement by Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has sparked a new debate regarding identity, history and education system in the country. During a TV interview, Asif admitted that for decades such history was taught in Pakistan, which distanced people from their real roots. He said that many people of Pakistan try to describe themselves as being of Arab, Turkish or Iranian origin, whereas the truth is that their ancestors were part of the Indian subcontinent. After the statement came out, the discussion intensified in the political and social circles of Pakistan.

What did Khwaja Asif say?

In the interview, Khwaja Asif said that after the formation of Pakistan, history was presented from a special perspective. He admitted that an attempt was made to make the new generation believe that their identity is separate from the ancient civilization of India. Asif said that his own ancestors were also Hindu and it does not make any difference to his current identity. He also said that accepting history is not a sign of weakness but of maturity.

Why were questions raised about history books?

The Defense Minister also raised questions on Pakistan's education system. He said that many historical facts were either changed or completely ignored in school textbooks. Giving an example, he said that mention of ancient Indian rulers and civilizations was very limited because they were considered “non-Islamic”. According to Asif, due to this the new generation could not understand their real historical and cultural relations properly.

How old is the identity crisis in Pakistan?

Experts believe that the debate over national identity is nothing new in Pakistan. Many historians and academicians have been raising the issue earlier also that history was presented there from a political perspective. After partition, Pakistan presented many historical aspects in a new way in an attempt to create its own identity. Critics say that because of this, an incomplete picture of history reached the new generation there.

What kind of reaction was seen on social media?

After Khwaja Asif's statement, a heated debate started on social media. Some people described his statement as “dare to accept the truth”, while many fundamentalist groups and nationalist sections criticized it. Some users said that Pakistan should accept its history honestly, while those who protested said that such statements weaken the national identity.
